About Us

We are an agile team of energy enthusiasts with a vision to fully automate and coherently manage the local energy sub-systems. Our competences include:

  • Process engineering, designing and building integrated energy systems
  • Software development and robust networking
  • System integration
  • Project management
  • R&D collaboration projects

OFFSET Energy brings together experts from several countries and with more than 100 years of combined experience in the field of energy optimization. This heterogeneous team consists of computer, mechanical and electrical engineers and PhDs, with proven track record in several international projects.

Our name provides insights into our mission: we are offsetting (providing counter-balance) energy from different sectors in order to optimize the energy system on several levels. Additionally, being also an acronym, our name explains the technological approach:

OFFSET = Optimal Flexibility Flow Systems, Engineering, Technology.

AURORA platform

Holistic energy management for local systems - industry, energy communities, utilities, microgrids

The energy system is dynamic and inter-dependent across different vectors and networks. Managing/optimizing only portion of the system ends in local optima, which can conflict with global optimum. Our technological approach ensures coherent management of all relevant energy flows, bringing benefits to all stakeholders in the sub-system.

  • Integrated system, built using our AURORA platform is end-to-end automated solution, capable of autonomous operation, without any human intervention. End-to-end automation ensures robustness and trust, while at the same time it reduces errors in operation. Furthermore, it allows for real-time response times, which is particularly important for local transients, such as voltage excursions.

AURORA platform, together with edge agent ANODE is built on open architecture with several supported communication protocols available (REST, MODBUS RTU/TCP, OPC DA/UA, BACnet, MQTT and others). Interoperable and secure data exchange between AURORA and assets is vendor and owner agnostic, allowing for optimization of large pool of distributed assets.

  • For the system to achieve efficient optimization results close to real time, AURORA employs an automated forecasting engine, capable of forecasting different categories, such as generation power, required energy and available flexibility. Depending on the configuration, forecasts can be calculated from minutes to several months into the future.

Automated decision making in the distributed system driven by AURORA is performed on forecasted values. Such an approach allows even for local process controllers to utilize the forecasting capabilities, thus improving performance and accommodate for process time constraints (e.g., ramping up/down).

  • AURORA takes into account the multi-dimensional physical nature, such as inter-dependencies with other energy vectors, and performs automated multi-vector optimization. Units, such as cogeneration plants and power-to-x facilities can benefit greatly from such a control mechanism, ensuring optimal operation in a very dynamic environment. Besides multi-vector approach, the AI algorithm also interfaces with several services, such as weather, different markets and DMS systems, which further improves the optimization results.

German Federal Office for Economic Affairs and Export Control (BAFA) lists AURORA as the software, able to support the implementation, maintenance and improvement of an energy management system in accordance with DIN EN ISO 50001. This includes, among other things, the complete mapping of the processes and data processing from the operation as well as the control and evaluation of the relevant operating parameters. This is confirmed by a certificate from an ISO/IEC 17065 accredited conformity assessment body.

Vertically nested systems

The centerpiece of our approach to optimization of the complex energy landscape is the concept of vertically nested systems. This systemic methodology is present in both our vision and in the technology we develop. It is the basis for consistency and allows for structured approach to very complex problems.

In a vertically nested structure, each nested level is responsible for its (local) optimization. The optimal configuration on each level is achieved by interfacing with the super level using automated exchange of the available potential – flexibility. Each superimposed level performs essentially the same function, eventually reaching the top level of the desired topology – use case. Such a structure has several important impacts:

  • Simplification of interactions/coupling between subsystems
  • Interoperability and standardization
  • Greater security of supply
  • Enable both intra-system optimization and optimization of complete MBA system
  • Reduce the necessary amount of specific regulations
  • Scalability in technologies
  • Optimization benefits are available on all nested levels (vs. only on the highest level)

Harmonization into vertically nested organization of the system is the enabling technology for many-to-many exchanges of flexible energy as it ensures holistic consideration of the capabilities and constraints of all involved actors. This is of particular importance for the sector-coupled operation and corresponding multi-dimensional optimization.

Vertically nested structure is immediately evident to the AURORA users. Not only can users perform aggregation of different categories on-the-fly, AURORA with its ANODE agents can run multiple nested optimization tasks in parallel, servicing internal (e.g. manufacturing process), micro (e.g. factory), local (distribution grid) and several other levels at the same time.
